Staff Augmentation 101: Why Staff Augmentation?

01

Staff Augmentation Vs. Outsourcing

Outsourcing typically involves delegating entire functions, processes, tasks, or departments to an external partner rather than handling it in-house.

In a traditional outsourcing model, you’re typically paying for an external partner to take full control and responsibility over work you choose not to handle internally because that work is not one of your core abilities. When using an outsourcing model, in addition to managing the execution of the work, your external partner will also typically handle staffing, management, and all other corresponding HR tasks.

Bottom line: with an outsourcing solution, you intentionally choose to give up control over the work and the people who do the work. While that might sound scary if you’ve never outsourced, it makes sense in certain situations, like when you have a specialized partner with abilities, skills, or expertise that you lack in-house, because it’s often more cost-effective than building out the expertise you need to get the job done internally.

At its core, augmented staffing is a type of outsourcing strategy in that there’s something you could do internally that you’re choosing to delegate to an external partner. But there’s one crucial difference —

As noted above, you retain control over the work with staff augmentation. You just don’t have to deal with managing the people who do the work.

In a staff augmentation model, you’re outsourcing the responsibility of the HR functions associated with your augmented staff, and you’re handing that off to an external partner whose bread and butter is HR. So if you really really love the idea of handling the HR aspect of employment, Staff Augmentation might not be the best fit for you since you’ll no longer have to handle the HR stuff.

Why Staff Augmentation?

There are several compelling business reasons why more and more organizations are turning to staff augmentation each year.

  • Access to global talent and markets: Because of the nature of the work typically performed by augmented staff, these employees are often well-suited for remote work, expanding your access to global pools of world-class talent and international market opportunities.
  • Access to specialized skills & expertise: By tapping into independent contractors and freelancers, you can leverage staff augmentation to acquire specific skills or expertise that might not be present inside your organization. Staff augmentation has become increasingly popular in tech spaces, where the competition for highly desired yet rare skills is fierce.
  • Increased efficiency & productivity: On-demand hiring of highly qualified and highly skilled professionals who are brought in to meet very specific needs often results in shorter ramp-up times for these employees to be efficient in their roles. In addition, a staff augmentation strategy allows your core staff to focus on what they do best, increasing their efficiency, productivity, and satisfaction.
  • Increased flexibility: Using augmented staffing allows you to respond with greater ease, speed, agility, and flexibility to rapidly changing business conditions… which, let’s be honest, have become the norm over the last several years. Staff augmentation allows you to quickly access the skills you need for specific projects without committing to long-term employment contracts or arrangements.
  • Decreased labor costs and increased profitability: Because your staffing partner will foot the bill for the recruitment, salaries, benefits, training, etc., for your highly specialized augmented staff, and because you won’t need to pay the premium of hiring those full-time employees to get the same work done, a staff augmentation model helps you reduce your overall labor costs and boost your bottom line profitability.
